PREVIOUS PERFORMANCES

The Fifth Cup is Caste Away Arts debut production. The production debuted at The Drum Theatre in Birmingham on Thursday 13th December 2007 to a SOLD OUT audience. The production was sponsored by Arts Council and Awards for All Lottery Funding, and supported by CasteWatchUK.

SYNOPSIS

Caste Away Arts’ debut production is the tale of fifteen year old Amrit Singh who, along with the rest of his family, moves to a new city to make a fresh start. All is going well until Amrit makes a shocking discovery about his past. From then on his world is turned upside down.

The Singhs find themselves being shunned by the local Sikh community and cracks start to appear in their once strong, family unit.

Will Amrit be able to overcome the prejudice surrounding him? And will the Singh family need to run away from their secrets yet again?

Based on true life experiences, The Fifth Cup is a poignant insight into caste discrimination within the British-Asian community.

The Fifth Cup is written by Rena Dipti Annobil and Reena Jaisiah and directed in association with Harvinder Sohal.

Director & Cast

Harvinder Sohal (Director of The Fifth Cup)

Black Country Playwright/Director Harvinder Sohal’s previous play ‘Udham’ sold out at Wolverhampton Arena Theatre last year. Born in the Phillipines and educated from the age of 12 in the West Midlands, she graduated in Drama and Media Communication from the University of Wolverhampton. In the same year she was accepted by the Birmingham Repertory theatre to study script writing under the transmission initiative. Harvinder also wrote and directed the play “Anum” which toured nationally in 2005. This play dealt with the issue of inter-caste relationships and got Harvinder noticed by many people, including CasteWatchUK. And so began her association with Caste Away Arts and the start of a beautiful relationship! Harvinder is directing “The Fifth Cup” in association with Caste Away Arts.
